Returning for another season is a well-known face in the CFL.
With the signing of veteran quarterback Dominique Davis by the Montreal Alouettes on Tuesday, he is no longer a free agent. Following the announcement that backup quarterback Caleb Evans’ season was cut short due to a knee injury, he signed.
Davis first visited Montreal as a member of the team in 2022, and he is returning this time. With two interceptions and 253 yards of passing, he scored three touchdowns. Despite recording a career-high 13 majors on the ground, Davis was utilized more in short-yard scenarios.

During his eight-year career, he has also played for the BC Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and Ottawa Redblacks. In addition to 499 rushing yards and 30 majors, his career stats include 3,967 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.
Evans had a chance to play this season due to Cody Fajardo’s injury, but Davis Alexander won the starting position. Evans totals 362 yards and eight majors at the end of the 2024 season. Having played with the Redblacks the previous two seasons, this is his second season with the Alouettes.
Given his initial impressions of Montreal, Alexander should continue to be Fajardo’s backup quarterback, with Davis lining up as the third quarterback in the depth chart. If the Alouettes want to limit Alexander’s amount of hits, they may deploy Davis as a short-yards quarterback.
After nine weeks, Montreal has the best record in the CFL with a 7-1 record. The Hamilton Tiger-Cat will play the Alouettes at home.
After Justin Fields’ preseason debut, Mike Tomlin issues a caution, saying, “It negated a lot of good things.”
Although Justin Fields made his preseason debut on Friday, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was not impressed with the quarterback’s performance overall.
In a 20-12 loss to Houston, Fields completed five of his six passes for 67 yards, but on two occasions, he mishandled the snap. From Tomlin’s perspective, the two botched snap exchanges rendered the entire performance ineffective.
According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Tomlin stated, “I thought he did some nice things.” However, it is evident that he participated in the C-Q interchange, and in my opinion, both the center and the quarterback share culpability for that. It overshadowed many of the positive developments during those initial drives.
Although the Steelers were able to recover both fumbles, the occurrences set them behind and resulted in two three-and-outs. Fields received two sacks as well.
If Fields didn’t already know, Pittsburgh has high standards. Russell Wilson seems to be in the driver’s seat for the starting position, so he will probably need to be very good to beat Wilson out. It is simply not something he can afford to make blunders like that, regardless of how well he performed in other areas.
