The Red Sox and the MLB trade deadline: The Red Sox (56-49) are presently one game behind the last American League wild card place following their victory against the Mariners on Monday.

Additionally, there is still a chance that the Red Sox add players before Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, when the MLB trade deadline takes place, considering Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow’s previous remarks about wanting to improve the squad. Few names would pique curiosity more in that respect than White Sox starter Garrett Crochet.

25-year-old Crochet is a 2024 All-Star. He has a 3.23 ERA through 22 starts, with 160 strikeouts (highest in the American League). MLB columnist Jon Heyman believes that Crochet is the White Sox star who is “more likely” to be sold, given Chicago’s current MLB-worst 27-82 record (compared to outfielder Luis Robert).

Furthermore, the Red Sox are among the many clubs who have apparently looked into making a trade for the gifted left-hander, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

According to individuals familiar with the White Sox’s discussions, the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles have all expressed varying degrees of interest in crocheting. “Should a trade go through, Crochet and his new team can work out a plan for him to play for the remainder of the season and for the two years he has left under club control.”

Naturally, there is a big demand for crochet (as Rosenthal mentioned). There are allegedly a number of other strong candidates interested, so any agreement would probably come at a significant cost.

Because this is Crochet’s first complete MLB season, he may also have an innings-cap. Consequently, teams interested in Crochet may need to sign him quickly to a contract extension. “Crochet reportedly will not pitch in October unless a team that acquires him gives him a contract extension,” as Rosenthal further clarified.
