After offensive lineman Alec Anderson was taken to a nearby hospital due to heat exhaustion during training camp, the Bills issued a statement.
The team stated, “Bills offensive lineman Alec Anderson is currently recovering in a local hospital after experiencing symptoms of a heat-related illness following today’s practice.” Alec was in good spirits when the Bills medical staff, general manager Brandon Beane, and coach Sean McDermott spoke with him over the phone a little while ago. Later this afternoon, he is anticipated to be discharged from the hospital.
After going undrafted in 2022, Anderson inked a contract with the Bills and has since been a member of their practice squad. He’s never participated in a game during the regular season.
Report: Former Chiefs’ $30 million wide receiver has “faded into the background” during Bills camp.
The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia reported on July 29 that veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who signed with the Buffalo Bills this summer after playing for the Kansas City Chiefs for the previous two seasons, isn’t leaving much of an impression at training camp.
The Bills’ top five wide receivers seemed to be very well-defined at the start of training camp. Among them were Mack Hollins, Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to Buscaglia. However, as camp has progressed, it is becoming increasingly evident that Valdes-Scantling may need to fight his way back into the top four, leaving the top five at that. Valdes-Scantling has been less prominent in the past few games. During team drills, he has not yet made a lasting impression in the passing game, and his chances of working with quarterback Josh Allen and the starting unit have decreased.
“It got to the point where, during a team drill session where the Bills divided their roster in half, Valdes-Scantling was over on the other field with the second and third units while the first team offense faced the first team defense on the main field with a few substitutes for each side of the ball. The fact that Chase Claypool missed practice due to a toe ailment made it even more obvious.
Buscaglia continued, saying it is “clear” that Tyrell Shavers, a second-year wideout who was not selected in 2023, and Claypool have outperformed MVS and that Valdes-Scantling has not been among Buffalo’s top five receivers during training camp.
On May 14, Valdes-Scantling inked a $2.25 million, one-year contract with Buffalo.
Marquez In Kansas, Valdes-Scantling fell short of the agreement.
Valdes-Scantling’s first significant NFL salary came when he signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Chiefs in March 2022.
In the 2023 AFC Championship Game, Valdes-Scantling had his best performance while wearing a Chiefs uniform against the Cincinnati Bengals, hauling in six receptions on eight targets for 116 yards and one touchdown. He only had one other 100-yard game in Kansas City other than that one.
According to Pro Football Reference, in 33 games played during the regular season, Valdes-Scantling collected 63 receptions, 1,002 yards, and three touchdowns over his two seasons with the Chiefs. He had three touchdowns, 250 yards, and 15 catches in seven postseason games.
On February 28, MVS was released by the Chiefs due to his failure to live up to his contract during his first two seasons in Kansas City. Releasing MVS allowed the Chiefs to avoid paying $12 million in salary cap penalties, hence the decision was a salary cap ploy.
Reactions on Twitter and X to Reports of Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s Camp Conflicts
People responded to reports that Valdes-Scantling was having difficulties during Bills training camp on X, formerly known as Twitter.
It takes him too long to get going since, while theoretically “fast,” he is not quick, according to one user. “This tracks because he has brick hands and is a horrible route runner. You might believe you can grow him if he was in years 1-2, but if he didn’t improve playing with Aaron Rodgers and #15 (Patrick Mahomes), then he’s washed.
Coleman, Samuel, and Shakir I receive locks. Is Claypool, Mack Hollins, and KJ Hamler winning more often than MVS? Like the WR room’s back half isn’t that great. Whoa, wrote a different user.
That should come as no surprise. Another user commented, “He’s kind of a one trick pony and doesn’t have the best hands or ball tracking skills.”
