Leesburg, Georgia Since May, Jeramiah McCloud, a three-star defensive lineman from Lee County, has made the Florida Gators his home team. Throughout the year, he has made frequent trips to Gainesville; in fact, he visited the city even when he was committing to Mississippi State before deciding to renounce his commitment and sign with the Gators. This past weekend, he returned to the city to attend UF’s Grill in the Ville picnic. McCloud relished the opportunity to spend time with the Florida coaching staff as well as interacting with some of the other recruits present in the building.

“We had a lot of fun, just [building the] relationship with coaches,” McCloud stated. “With Coach [Gerald] Chatman, I relaxed. I got to hang out with a few commits and played a few games with Coach [Billy] Napier. I met Vernell [Brown III], a new commit, and we had a conversation.We simply had a great time today.”

In an effort to strengthen the 2025 class, McCloud has been recruiting several of UF’s targets along the defensive line. Malik Autry, a five-star recruit from Auburn, has been in his ear, but the two were unable to spend time together last weekend since Autry was visiting the Tigers. Jarquez Carter, a recent Ohio State commit, was in town on Saturday and is another player McCloud is still trying to sign.

Quarterback Graham Mertz has been added to the Maxwell Award watchlist ahead of his second season with the Gators and his sixth overall. This season will be the 88th year that the esteemed award—given to college football’s most outstanding player—is bestowed.

Mertz was having a good season with the Gators when he was forced to return to Florida for another season. The injury was sustained during Florida’s 33-31 loss to Missouri on November 18. Mertz’s collarbone fracture was non-displaced.

During the 2023 season, the Overland Park, Kansas native completed 2,903 passes for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Mertz’s second season with the Gators will face even higher expectations.

Billy Napier, the head coach of UF, complimented Mertz’s ongoing progress in Gainesville during SEC Media Days in Dallas. He stated that Mertz’s self-assurance has grown and that his dedication to the advancement of the Florida program is constantly apparent.

“I believe there is a certain degree of assurance. The players respect him, in my opinion. The staff respects him for that. When you consider his experience from the previous season, he arrives with many questions, uncertainties, and concerns about what his future on the squad would hold. rarely knows anyone in the building and has no relationships. Simply put, I believe he came from a different area. Before hitting the main stage at the Omni Hotel in Dallas, Napier remarked, “It’s like a rookie in the NFL or a free agent that goes to a new team and now he’s in Year 2.

“Last year, he won the respect of his teammates on the field thanks to his perseverance, tenacity, style of competition, and output. He takes charge of the group at first. It’s his group. He’s leading from the front with incredible effectiveness. This guy is personally motivating this team. I believe it’s clear from watching him that he returned with a mission.”

On the primary platform, Napier would keep praising his signal-caller while addressing the country’s media.

Speaking on the main stage of the Omni Hotel, Napier maintained his compliments for the starting signal-caller for the University of Florida, stating that his choice to play one more season at the collegiate level in Gainesville was perhaps the biggest topic ahead of a crucial year for the school in Gainesville.

“Graham Mertz, the biggest, the No. 1 storyline and the biggest decision that was made to affect our team is when Graham Mertz decided to come back and play quarterback for the Gators,” Napier stated. “Overland Park, Kansas: 43 starts, 8,300 yards, 58 touchdowns. His parents are amazing individuals. Ron and Amy are amazing. I received my UF degree this spring and am now working for a master’s in sport management.”

With 2,903 passing yards for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions in 2023, Mertz was just a few yards away from breaking into the top-10 in Florida program history in passing yards in a single season. If not for an injury sustained late in the season against the Tigers, Mertz was almost certain to have made it into the record books at Florida.

“Graham deserved every bit of it, and his competitiveness last year won him the respect of his teammates. Here, he’s ready for a breakthrough year,” Napier remarked. “It’s a big deal for Graham to be back to play quarterback for our team.”

This season, 5-star OT Michael Fasusi intends to monitor Florida

Five-star Michael Fasusi of Lewisville, Texas, traveled back to Florida for the first time since November of last year to see UF’s penultimate regular season game against Florida State. He was able to enjoy the Gators, Grill in the Ville picnic when he came early on Saturday morning. This allowed him some time to get back in touch with Rob Sale, the offensive line coach, and John Decoster, the new assistant offensive line coach.

“Man, it was fun to be back there,” Fasusi remarked. “The identical individuals. Decoster notices Sale and says, “What’s up?” Kind of who I spent the most time with. Just relaxing up there was great. Acquiring these connections. Coach Decoster, coach Sale, and I have been developing our friendship. Since then, it has continued to improve. Did some rap battles and scavenger hunts. Of course, speaking with Coach Napier as well. Those were a few of the standout moments.
