The Boston Bruins announced on Tuesday that they had extended forward Marc McLaughlin to a one-year, two-way contract with a $775,000 budget hit.
The 24-year-old has participated in 135 games throughout his two complete AHL seasons with the Providence Bruins. McLaughlin has amassed 44 points during his Providence career on 21 goals and 23 assists.
During the 2023–24 season, the 6-foot, 205-pound forward scored eight goals and six assists for a total of 14 points in 68 games with Providence.
McLaughlin has participated in several NHL games, totaling 14 games over the course of three seasons. The native of Massachusetts skated in 11 games in the 2021–2022 season, scoring three goals. He made one appearance and scored one point in 2023–24 against the New York Islanders.
Goalie Jeremy Swayman is now the lone unsigned restricted free agent for the Boston Bruins following the signing.
This Cubs pitcher is reportedly of interest to the Red Sox.
In the American League wild-card race, the Boston Red Sox are in the running for a postseason position, behind the Kansas City Royals by just half a game.
Craig Breslow, chief baseball officer of the Red Sox, described how he intends to approach the trade deadline by balancing the need to add players to Boston’s lineup with long-term planning. Bob Nightengale of USA Today said that he checked in with the Chicago Cubs.
Nightengale reported, “The Red Sox and Yankees have had talks about starter Jameson Taillon with the Chicago Cubs.” However, the Cubs have not decided if they will be sellers or buyers by the trade deadline.
After the All-Star break, the Cubs lost their next three games and are now 4.5 games behind in the National League wild card.
Despite the Cubs’ difficulties, Taillon has pitched 93 innings this season with a strong 3.10 ERA, giving up just 12 home runs, 18 walks, and 75 strikeouts.
The Red Sox are considering acquiring a starter to support Taner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Brayan Bello in their rotation, while Garrett Whitlock and Lucas Giolito are sidelined with injuries that could terminate the season.
Boston’s depth would be improved by adding stability to the Red Sox rotation by moving Josh Winckowski and Cooper Criswell into the bullpen.
After the 2024 season, Taillon’s contract will expire in two years, and his yearly pay will be $18 million. Despite having a 10-team no-trade clause, he would provide the 2025–26 rotation an experienced arm, since reliever Kenley Jansen and pitcher Pivetta are set to become free agents in the winter.
