Just now: Boston Red Sox owner John Henry have finally sold his team to….

In recent years, Boston Red Sox owner John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group have steadily reduced the team’s payroll.

As the club’s fortunes have deteriorated and ticket costs have risen, Red Sox fans have grown increasingly vociferous in their demand for reform.

Boston last won the World Series in 2018. Since winning the World Series, Boston’s baseball club has steadily deteriorated, with the Red Sox expected to miss the M.L.B playoff for the fifth time in six years by 2024.

During that six-year period, the Fenway Sports Group traded away fan favorite Mookie Betts, let Xander Bogaerts leave in free agency, did not chase elite free agents, and surrendered Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves in a money-saving maneuver.

As a result, the Red Sox payroll has slowly decreased from $233 million in 2017 to $206 million in 2022 and $171 million this year. Boston is presently ranked 12th in MLB team payrolls this season, tens of millions of dollars behind the Toronto Blue Jays ($227 million), Texas Rangers ($226 million), and San Francisco Giants.
