ESPN NEWS NOW: The women’s super star opportunity to prove her WNBA career to the U.S. soon.
Caitlin Clark will use her early WNBA performance as an audition to see if she can make the American women’s basketball team for the Olympics.
Before June 1st, the women’s roster for the Paris Games will not be announced. Clark will get the first opportunity in her WNBA career to prove to the U.S. women’s basketball selection committee that she is deserving of a spot on the squad. Clark was unable to attend the U.S. training camp this month.
Jennifer Rizzotti, chair of the selection committee, said she will be observing.
Whether it’s for the present or the future, you should always add new players to the pool, Rizzotti stated to The Associated Press. “Obviously, we adhere to our core values of skill, positional fit, commitment, and experience. It must be a synthesis of a whole body of work. Some people won’t be treated fairly, even now.
Although it took place during the Final Four, when Clark was still playing for a national championship with Iowa, she received an invitation to attend the U.S. training camp in Cleveland. While it wasn’t a must to join the squad, the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader would have benefited from showing the selection committee that she could compete with some of the world’s greatest players. The United States held its final camp before revealing its roster in Cleveland.
Just before the Olympics in July, the team will spend a few days together in Phoenix, Arizona, where they will participate in an exhibition All-Star game against WNBA players.
