Whether via free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots still need a left tackle.
This time, a division foe made a big addition, severely hurting their list of possible fits on Friday night.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith will sign a free agent contract with the New York Jets. Former NFL MVP and Super Bowl XLV champion Aaron Rodgers has a strong tackle to cover him up front as he recovers from an Achilles injury.
Smith began his 13-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, where he developed into one of the top players at one of the most crucial positions in football. Smith now takes a risk by moving to New York City to guard the blind side of a quarterback who could end up in the Hall of Fame.
Regarding the Patriots, they made the proper decision in bringing Mike Onwenu back for a three-year contract. Following a strong showing in 2023, Onwenu is expected to start right tackle. Conversely, the market for tackle is rapidly contracting. Left tackle is still a significant need for New England, so the Patriots will need to move quickly or possibly change their priorities during the draft.
