Reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels of MassLive, who cover the New England Patriots, aren’t believing what some people are saying about the team possibly trading down from overall choice No. 3 in the 2024 NFL Draft order.

Previous reports from a number of informed sources claimed that Wolf “wants to accumulate draft capital and build up the roster” and that he may “stockpile draft picks” by selecting later than the third overall pick. It should be noted that these opinions were expressed prior to the Patriots reaching a decision to designate veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett as a bridging option and prior to the team shipping 2023 Week 1 starter Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Furthermore, Mason said that backup Bailey Zappe has only a “29%” chance of making New England’s final 53-man roster later this summer.

The Minnesota Vikings are a frequent contender to go from choice No. 11 overall into at least the top five picks, and it appears like Minnesota is getting ready to make a big splash. In addition, the New York Giants may trade the third pick to New England for three second-round selections and the sixth overall pick this year.

Daniels thinks the Patriots should select LSU Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels or North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall choice. Assuming the Chicago Bears select Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans as the consensus first pick in the draft, the Washington Commanders are anticipated to select one of those talents at No. 2 overall.

“With Brissett in place, it means the Patriots wouldn’t have to start Maye or [Jayden] Daniels,” Daniels said. “They might gradually assemble their team around their inexperienced quarterback and let that youngster play for a year.
