According to sources who spoke to ESPN on Tuesday, Kenny Payne will likely receive word from Louisville officials within the next 24 hours regarding his resignation as men’s basketball coach.

After losing in the ACC tournament earlier in the day, Payne had not yet had a conversation with athletic director Josh Heird by Tuesday night. After falling to NC State 94-85, Louisville’s season came to an end. The Cardinals went 8-24 overall and 3-17 in ACC play.

According to ESPN, sources, Louisville is estimated to owe Payne about $8 million, which represents the buyout of the remaining portion of the six-year contract he signed upon hiring. With just one victory away from home, he ends his Louisville career with an overall record of 12-52.
