Georgia State announced on Friday night that it had hired Dell McGee, the longtime running backs coach at Georgia, as its next head coach.
McGee was one of two assistants that Kirby Smart had worked with since the beginning of his tenure at Georgia in 2016. McGee also coached high school teams to championships. At 53, he finally receives his long-awaited first college head coaching position.
On February 15, 2015, Shawn Elliott abruptly left his position as tight ends coach at Georgia State to take a position at South Carolina, where he had worked before moving to Georgia State in 2015. Spring practice at Georgia State had already started.
According to a school source, Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and Texas A&M running backs coach Trooper Taylor also conducted interviews this week.

What McGee brings to Georgia State Although it started out as an FCS program in 2010 and advanced to the Sun Belt and FBS three years later, Georgia State is still a relatively young institution. In seven seasons, Elliott led the Panthers to five winning records, but they never finished higher than 8-5.
