The husband of an Alabama lady who was discovered dead more than 20 years ago has been charged with murder, according to a statement released by the Dothan Police Department on Monday.

On December 30, 2001, Sharon Mills, then 49 years old, was reported missing by her husband, Dwight Mills. A month later, the Dothan Police Department reported that her body was found in Holmes County, just across the Florida state line.

After the police declared they had run out of leads, the inquiry came to a standstill.

At a press conference, Angel Faulk, the victim’s daughter, stated, “This is a day we’ve been praying for for 22 years.”

Dwight Mills, 69, was charged with murder and mistreatment of a corpse. According to investigators, they were able to secure a warrant for Mills’ arrest after gathering fresh information and evidence and following up on previous leads.

When Faulk was in her 20s, her mother filed for divorce from her father.

Investigators are actively working on additional cold cases, according to a statement from Dothan police, and no unresolved murder case is ever “closed.” “We will do everything we can to bring closure to families and perpetrators to justice,” said the press release.

Glad she never gave up looking for answers regarding her mother’s passing, Faulk said. She mentioned how close she was to her mother. “My closest buddy was my mom. At the press conference, Faulk remarked, “She had me when I was seventeen, and we were more like sisters.

Mills is being detained at the moment on a $1,510,000 bond, according to the police.
