SO SAD: Georgia head coach is sack duel to…

This offseason, Georgia Football will be replacing another coach. On Wednesday, it was declared that.

In order to pursue other possibilities, Scott Cochran is resigning from his role as Georgia’s special teams coordinator. Kirk Benedict will take over as the special teams coordinator after serving as a special teams analyst for the last two seasons.

In 2020, Cochran joined Smart as the coordinator of special teams. While at Alabama, Cochran was one of the more well-known strength and conditioning coaches in collegiate football. However, Cochran desired greater involvement on the field, and Smart provided him with the chance that Saban was unable to.

August of the same summer saw the announcement that Cochran would be taking a leave of absence from the football team. Will Muchcamp was promoted from analyst to co-defensive and special teams coordinator as a result of this. In October 2021, Cochran returned to the Dawgs and helped the team win back-to-back national titles in Athens.

Cochran has been transparent about his struggles with addiction and has even shared a few posts about his sobriety on social media.

It is strange that a coach, particularly one of Cochran’s caliber, would depart in the middle of February, so I pondered over this tale for a few days. I had assumed that further information regarding his departure and its cause would surface. But there hasn’t been much information on the topic as of Friday afternoon.

Whether right or wrong, this has made me wonder why Cochran abruptly quit the Georgia program. Upon first learning about Cochran’s departure, I presumed it was due to health concerns. That is not a very big leap to conclude.

However, the boys I talked with at the coffee shop told me that Cochran could have departed because, for whatever reason, he was not a good fit for his post. Which led me to believe that notion had some merit, especially considering that Cochran did not find employment immediately after moving out of Georgia. But once more, all of this is just conjecture on my part.

Regardless of the cause of Cochran’s departure, he is an excellent instructor. Tell me that he is not a useful assist after seeing all the championship teams he has been a part of! It’s hard to think that this is the last we hear from Cochran, and that he won’t be coaching again anytime soon.
