After a video appeared on social media on Monday that appeared to show someone paragliding from incomplete structures that drew graffiti artists and taggers to Downtown Los Angeles, city officials in Los Angeles raised the alarm even further.

The buildings seen in the video seem to be the same unfinished skyscrapers that had almost thirty stories’ worth of graffiti written on them.

“I’m afraid someone will trip or fall,” stated Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles. “There are people who are parachuating off of the building.”

Bass stated that since the project developers did not suggest any safety precautions to keep people off the property, local officials were forced to deploy the Los Angeles Police Department’s already limited resources, dispatching officers to circle the site.

“I promise that tragedy will occur.”

When the Chinese developers ran out of money in 2019, they decided not to proceed with the construction of Oceanwide Plaza, which was originally intended to include condos, a mall, and a hotel on the 1100 block of Flower Street. Graffiti artists began to frequent the unrestrained complex of abandoned skyscrapers when construction ceased.

A move to extend the deadline for the property owners to reply to the city’s request to secure the abandoned building and repair the surrounding walkways was unanimously adopted by the LA City Council on Friday.

According to City Councilmember Kevin de León, the property owners were contacted by the city via a variety of channels, including social media postings, phone calls, faxes, and emails.
