Houston — As Michigan and Washington get ready to play in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, a tornado watch is in force for Houston.

The tornado watch is in force until 9 p.m. CST, according to an advisory released by the National Weather Service on Monday afternoon. A “few tornados” and scattered hail up to two inches in size are probable, according to the NWS. Winds up to 70 mph could be scattered.

gusts up to 45 mph in a 20 to 30 mph wind. directions that go from the northwest to the rear of the front and from the southeast to the south.Unsecured things may be blown around by strong winds. There could be a few power outages and tree branches that are blown down.

In order to “avoid potential severe weather,” the Office of Emergency Management for the City of Houston advises spectators to arrive at the stadium early.” The OEM did, however, announce earlier on Monday afternoon that “tailgating opened at 11AM, and all venue events will still begin at 3PM, despite weather reports.”

TMI earlier this week confirmed that NRG Stadium, the host site of the CFP National Championship Game, has a retractable roof, which would be closed on Monday.

Michigan football plays for its first national title since 1997 on Monday night against Washington at NRG Stadium in Houston.

With victories over Penn State, Ohio State, and Alabama en route to the CFP National Championship Game, the Wolverines have amassed a perfect 14-0 record. There, they’ll take on the 14-0 Huskies, who have one of the most potent attacks in NCAA football.

The collision will showcase a divergence in fashion: Michigan controlled the lines of scrimmage against the Crimson Tide, and it has become the program’s identity over the previous three years. With Blake Corum running the ball behind a strong offensive line, U-M can control possession time and exert game-changing influence. For its part, Washington boasts a playmaker-studded offense led by a quarterback of Heisman caliber and a receiver of Biletnikoff caliber. In a match of strengths, their outstanding passing offense takes on Michigan’s superior passing defense.

Michigan and Washington will kick off on Monday, January 8 at 6:45 p.m. CST/7:45 p.m. EST. The game will be shown nationally on ESPN, with Chris Fowler calling play-by-play, Kirk Herbstreit handling color, Holly Rowe covering Michigan, and Molly McGrath covering Washington.

After thirteen games, Michigan and Washington have an 8-5 all-time record against their Pacific Northwest rivals. The two teams will face off again in Seattle this autumn after U-M prevailed 31–10 at the Big House in their most recent match in 2021.

The Wolverines are vying for their first national championship since the 1997 campaign and are making their first trip in the CFP National Championship Game.
